Reasons to use on a computer

There are numerous reasons in which you may wish to zoom features on your computer. Some reasons include:

Zooming in on your computer can make it easier to read small text. For instance, if you’re reading a document on your computer that you don’t have the ability to edit, zooming in can help you see smaller text. This is useful for people who prefer to read larger text or for people who aren’t using their glasses or contact lenses.

Fitting more on your screen

5 methods for how to zoom in and out on a computer

Here are five different methods for zooming in and out on your computer:

Keyboard method

The keyboard method involves using the + and – keys. On most keyboards, you will find them situated next to your “Backspace” button. If you have a number pad on your keyboard, you may also find the plus and minus buttons here. Here’s how you can zoom in and out on your computer using your keyboard:

          1. Press the “Control” key. There are typically two “Control” keys on a keyboard, denoted by the letters “ctrl.”
          2. Locate the plus and minus keys on your keyboard. They’re often two different buttons, with the “+” and “=” symbol on one key and the “-” and “_” symbols on the other.
          3. If you want to zoom in, press the plus key while holding down the “Control” key.
          4. If you want to zoom out, press the minus key while holding down the “Control” key.
          5. Continue to zoom in or out until you reach your desired view.

Each time you press one of the plus or minus buttons, the level of zoom increases or decreases.

Keyboard and mouse method

Another way to zoom in or out is by using the scroll wheel on your mouse. If your mouse has one of these wheels located between the left and right buttons, you can use it to zoom in and out by following these steps:

          4. To close out of the Magnifier, click on the “X” in the upper-right corner.

Within the Magnifier settings, you can also choose whether to magnify the entire screen or just a portion of it, mimicking a magnifying lens. You can access these settings by clicking on the gear icon.

Web browser method

Many web browsers have their own built-in zoom settings you can adjust. Here’s how to zoom in and out using a web browser:

I find a keyboard or mouse hard to use

If you find a keyboard or mouse difficult to use, the following information explains how to use speech recognition software to navigate web pages and online services on ssa.gov. Speech recognition software allows the user to move focus to an application object by voicing the object label name or the object type. Object types include:

      • Text Box List Box Link Image Screen File

Each of these object types are given a label name that is visible on the screen and the voice user can say the name to move focus to that object. A screen, an application or file can be accessed by voicing the text in the Title Bar. If there is an object or many objects on a screen without labels then the user can voice an object type which will number all objects of that type on that screen. For example voicing “link” would number all links that are on the visible screen and then a specific link can then be accessed by choosing the number desired. Voicing “checkbox”, “radio button, “text box, etc. will operate in the same manner. If the screen design does not allow moving focus by voicing a label or an object type then the speech recognition software may provide a utility to move the mouse pointer in discrete steps or continuously. Social Security has designed web pages and applications to utilize several different methods of using speech in order to provide flexibility in using speech recognition capabilities. Users should try combinations of these methods to determine what best meets an individual’s needs.
